CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- New York State Electric and Gas is hosting an informational meeting Tuesday in Corning in regards to the company's switch to smart meter technology.

NYESEG is switching the traditional meters to smart meters for customers in Steuben, Chemung and Schuyler Counties in a process that should finish in 2025. Officials say the move could save residents and businesses money. The smart meters are expected to provide customers with bills based on real energy use, provide faster outage detection and a better breakdown of customers energy use.

The open house will be held at the Corning American Legion at 8 River Rd. from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Customers can stop in at anytime to take with project representatives about the switch, according to NYSEG. Representatives will be able to speak about the installation process, the scope of work, time line and potential benefits.

The company says registration for the event is not required.
