Dozens of retired teachers filled the state capitol this week, advocating for cost of living adjustments for their pensions.
When Pennsylvania re-did its pension system in 2001, teachers who retired before then were not included in the updates.
The legislature has also not passed any cost-of-living adjustments since then to make up for these teachers not being included.
A bipartisan group of lawmakers attended a rally this week to push the Senate to pass a law that would address the issue.
One retired teacher spoke on how he lives on the same salary since 1998.
"It is impossible. I'm standing here to tell you it is impossible,” said Robert McVay, a retired teacher from the Franklin, Pennsylvania area. "I cannot live on my education pensions. So what does that mean for me and my family? Yard sales, garage sales, thrift store clothing. What happened to my retirement?"
McVay had to sell his family home and move to a mobile home park in Florida; he says he will not be able to afford to take his wife out for a nice dinner on their anniversary.
The Senate has had the bill in their chamber since last fall.
