STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. (WENY) -- New York on Friday extended the deadline for homeowners impacted by the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby and other summer storms around the state to apply for emergency repair grants.

The previous deadline would have expired Monday. Now, residents whose homes were damaged by Debby in Steuben and Allegany counties have until Nov. 8 to apply for emergency assistance.

The move comes after State Senator Tom O'Mara, along with Assembly members Phil Palmesano, Marjorie Byrnes, and Joe Giglio joined forces and asked Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, to extend the application deadline and eliminate the income threshold to access funding.

The deadline was extended, but New York did not remove the income requirement to apply for funding. In Steuben County, all households who make less than $157,000 are eligible to apply for assistance.

Lawmakers also asked Hochul to have the state to fully assume the local share of disaster-related costs, no word from officials on if they are posturing to do so.

Homeowners who need critical repairs to their property to make it safe, sanitary and habitable are able to apply for assistance under the Homes and Community Renewal emergency home repair assistance program.

Funds are also available to Oswego, Delaware, St. Lawrence, Franklin and Jefferson County residents impacted by the remnants of Debby. Chautauqua, Madison, Erie, Oneida, Essex, Saratoga, Lewis and Warren County residents can apply for assistance if their homes sustained damage in severe weather events from July 10 to 16. Those who live in Nassau and Suffolk County whose homes were damaged in severe weather from August 18 and 19 can also apply for help until Nov. 8.
