Runners Prepare for the Annual Wineglass Marathon Weekend

CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- In just under two days, runners will be lacing up at the starting line for the annual Wineglass Marathon. At Friday's runners' expo, participants picked up their bibs and had a chance to shop for goodies like sunglasses and earbuds for their big run.

A total of 6,500 runners are coming into town from 47 states and 15 countries to either complete the full marathon or half marathon. Many have been training for months to prepare for this strenuous but rewarding experience.

Sunday will begin early for most athletes, long before the sun starts to rise.

"The Wegmans Half Marathon starts up by Campbell, up by Campbell Savona High School, and that starts at 7:45, and then we actually start the Guthrie marathon a half hour later at 8:15, and the reason is we end up on a bike path in Painted Post and it kind of cuts down on congestion in there," says Race Director for the Wineglass Marathon Sheila Sutton. "We have a really deep elite field this year for both the full marathon and the half marathon, so it should be exciting for spectators to get out and see some really fast times. The weather looks great, nice and cool in the morning and it should be a really fun day whether you're running or spectating or volunteering."

Runner will cross the finish line in Corning's Centerway Square on Market Street throughout the morning. WENY News wishes all the runners the best of luck and congratulations on their accomplishments.
