ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Ithaca Tompkins International Airport is set to close its customs facility after a vote from the Tompkins County Legislature.

Lawmakers in a 13-1 vote decided to close the facility due to low demand and economic factors.

The move means future international travelers to Ithaca will need to stop at an airport with a customs, before continuing their journey to Ithaca.

The Tompkins County Legislature is considering re-purposing the customs site into something else that could generate more revenue for the airport. No word yet on what could replace the customs center and when the facility will close.

Lawmakers say they are working to bring more and less expensive flights to the airport. Customs could reopen at a later date if the need were to arise.
