ERIN, N.Y. (WENY) -- Across the country this weekend, alpaca lovers have a reason to celebrate as National Alpaca Days was on for this weekend. Several farms and sanctuaries in the Southern Tier were keen to celebrate with the unique South American mammal, including Heartland Haven Farm in Chemung County.
The Erin-based animal sanctuary spent all weekend paying tribute to the alpaca, which are characterized by their long legs and neck as well as their soft, fleece-like coats. However, Heartland Haven Farm also takes care of chickens, ducks, goats, pigs, horses, donkeys, rabbits and more.
Many of the animals on the farm were rescued, and much of the work that goes in to keeping them healthy and happy is performed by volunteers, and Heartland Haven Farm has made it their mission to offer opportunities to anyone of any ability.
"We do our best and I do have some volunteers some great volunteers that do come and help, which is a godsend because I also work outside of the farm, so it couldn't be tough at times but this is the love of mine, and my animals mean so much to me and to be able to share them with everybody else. To me, it's not really like a job," said Penny Roman, owner and operator of Heartland Haven Farm.
Families had the chance to meet with the animals up close and learn about them at the same time. Heartland Haven Farm also houses a gift shop where alpaca fiber products along with goat milk products like soaps and lotions are available for purchase.
