Pennsylvania Lawmaker Calls for Campaign Security Protocol

As the safety of political candidates is being discussed at the national level, one Pennsylvania lawmakers says the state can take more action too.

Representative Malcolm Kenyatta (D-181) today announced plans for a bill that will explicitly let candidates use campaign finances to hire personal security.

Current law does not specify anything about using funds this way.

Kenyatta, who is running for state auditor, has also proposed that more top elected officials get regular security details.

He points to recent national legislation congress passed to increase security for presidential candidates as an example to follow.

"I think that here in Pennsylvania, we should really be following that bipartisan model,” said Kenyatta. “To say that we're going to do everything we can to keep candidates and to keep some of our highest ranking elected officials protected in a moment where these threats are becoming, sadly, all too common."

Right now, the Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General are the only state elected officials who automatically get state police security escorts.
