SOUTHERN TIER, NEW YORK (WENY) -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency approved a Major Disaster Declaration in the wake of severe flooding caused by the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby from August 8 to 10, Congressman Nick Langworthy announced Tuesday. The declaration applies to Steuben, Yates, Allegany, Broome, Delaware, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Ontario and St. Lawrence Counties.

The approval now frees up federal resources to communities impacted by the flooding in the Southern Tier.

“With homes, businesses, and key infrastructure severely impacted, this Major Disaster Declaration will allow people to rebuild their lives. Now that this assistance is in place, we can focus on helping our neighbors get back on their feet after such a devastating storm,” said Congressman Nick Langworthy.

The declaration allows local governments and non-profit organizations access to funds through FEMA's Public Assistance Program to repair key buildings and infrastructure like roads, bridges, water treatment facilities, schools, parks and more. The program can also help with debris removal and other protective measures, according to New York State.

“The effects of Tropical Storm Debby caused extreme damage across parts of New York last month, and I'm thankful President Biden has approved my request for a Major Disaster Declaration,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “My administration will continue to work with FEMA to ensure those affected receive the critical funding they need to begin the recovery and rebuilding process.”

Hazard Mitigation Grant Programs are also now available in New York. Any county is eligible to apply for this funding through the state. The program will help municipalities plan and implement hazard mitigation measures, in the likelihood severe weather events happen in the future.

FEMA has been on the ground in Tioga County Pennsylvania and surrounding counties assisting residents after President Joe Biden approved the disaster declaration for that area a few weeks ago.
