Elmira Fire Dept. gets over $1 million in federal funding

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Elmira Fire Department is getting over a $1 million in federal funding to help boost staffing. According to the office of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the department is getting $1,365,672 to help add an extra firefighter to every shift.

“The City of Elmira and the Elmira Fire Department are beyond grateful and excited to be awarded the FY 2023 SAFER Grant. With rising calls and additional strain on department resources, this grant will allow the department to add additional staff to operate safely and effectively. We are hoping to use the additional staff to add a rescue truck to our first due response. This apparatus would offer additional specialized tools and equipment, a quicker response, and cut down on wear and tear on our larger apparatus," said said Elmira Fire Chief Andrew Mallow in a prepared statement.

Elmira wasn't alone in getting money, the Binghamton Fire Department also got funding to the tune of $1,836,624. According to Schumer's office, the money will let Binghamton hire more staff and reduce overtime costs.

“Across the Southern Tier, brave firefighters risk their lives on the frontlines every day rushing to danger to protect our communities,” said Senator Schumer in a prepared statement, adding, “This $3.2+ million will help the Binghamton and Elmira Fire Departments train and hire new firefighters to keep the Southern Tier safe. I stood with firefighters across Upstate NY to push for the reauthorization of the SAFER program because I know how important it is for our first responders to be prepared. I’m grateful that the SAFER program is continuing to deliver results for Upstate NY and help Southern Tier fire departments staff up.”

Senator Schumer wasn't alone in celebrating the news. Local Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy also said the money would make a big difference for Elmira.

“Elmira’s firefighters play an essential role in safeguarding our community, and this significant federal investment will allow the department to expand its team and enhance emergency response capabilities,” said Congressman Langworthy in a prepared statement, adding “This SAFER grant will help ensure the Elmira Fire Department is ready and able to meet the local demand for fire and emergency services, protecting local families, homes, and businesses.”
