Federal Funding Seeks to Preserve History at Newtown Battlefield

ASHLAND, NY (WENY) -- A historic site in Chemung County is receiving federal funding to expand its footprint and protect local history.

The National Park Service has awarded $860,278 to the town of Ashland, to be used to acquire 322 acres at Newtown Battlefield. The money comes from a grant under the American Battlefield Protection Program, which aims to protect significant battlefields across the country.

The location in Chemung County was the site of the Battle of Newtown in August of 1779 during the Revolutionary War - the only major battle of the Sullivan Expedition.

The site is now a New York state park, on the National Register of Historic Places, and holds historic re-enactments annually.

Congressman Nick Langworthy (R-NY23) announced the funding on Monday.

“The Newtown Battlefield is a treasured and historic gem in Chemung County,” said Congressman Langworthy. “This investment will allow the Town of Ashland to preserve this important part of our nation's history for future generations while promoting local tourism and education. Preserving our historic battlefields also honors the sacrifice of those who gave their lives and ensures that their heroism is never forgotten.”
