HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Part of I-86 between Horseheads and Elmira was closed overnight as emergency crews worked to put out a tractor-trailer on fire that had 40,000 pounds of vegetables in it.

According to the Chemung County Sheriff's Office, they responded to the scene at 12:14 a.m. and found a refrigerated 53-foot trailer fully engulfed.  They say the driver of the truck was able to pull over safely and disconnect the truck.

The Elmira Fire Department, Horseheads Fire Department, Town and Country Fire Department, and Breesport Fire Department were able to put out the fire by 1:30 A.M.  The Sheriff's Department says Rinwalske‘s towing responded to remove the trailer and cleaned up approximately 40,000 pounds of bok choy from the highway.

The highway was closed from exit 54 to 56 while crews worked.
