National Recovery Month: CASA-Trinity Supports People Overcoming Substance Abuse Disorder

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- September is recognized as National Recovery Month, a time to highlight the challenges and success of people overcoming substance abuse disorder.

"I think for anybody coming into treatment, recovery is their main focus, regardless of the motivation," says V Clinical Supervisor Alica Smalley. "For some people, it's just to be able to move forward with their life. It's to kind of get through. They need to get through whatever."

For others, recovery means learning how to make new choices after a lifelong struggle with addiction. CASA-Trinity, a local organization that supports people in their recovery journey, serves approximately 500 clients both inpatient and outpatient.

"At Casa Trinity, we try to offer a variety of services to support different needs that any of our clients might have coming into treatment. Again that can range from helping people through food insecurity to helping people get set up with housing, to helping people get to an inpatient facility if that is their recommended level of care," says Smalley.

Smalley emphasizes that CASA-Trinity's services, are designed to meet clients where they are in their recovery journey. By offering people individualized care, they aim to promote long-term success for each client. One of the most challenging steps is often detox, a process that can be daunting.

"To some people, it means that you're generally going to go through a period of withdrawal symptoms and that is relatively uncomfortable, sometimes even painful. So for some people, it does bring about a lot of fear. We recommend medically supervised detox where you're in a facility where you have access to doctors, where people can be monitoring your vital signs and your needs," shared Smalley.

National Recovery Month continues to bring much-needed attention to addiction recovery and provides resources to those facing the challenges of substance use disorder. CASA-Trinity is available to support everyone Monday through Friday, offering a safe place for people to begin their journey toward healing.

If you or someone you know is seeking help, Casa Trinity is one of many local resources available.
