Daughters of the American Revolution commemorate Constitution Day

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- September 17th marks Constitution Day.  To honor the signing of the Constitution back in 1787, the Chemung Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held a special ceremony in Elmira Tuesday afternoon.

When the Constitution was originally signed, church bells rang out across Philadelphia.  More than a dozen people came out in Elmira to ring their own bells, and recognize the signing of the Constitution.  This is a yearly event for the Daughters of the American Revolution.

"We like to raise awareness in our community. The Constitution affects every single one of us. We're both women, so of course the right to vote is in there for us, and I think everybody needs to understand just how hard it is to amend the Constitution, and what it stands for for all of us," said Christi Brady, the Vice Regent of the Chemung Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Elmira Mayor Dan Mandell officially marked the week of September 17th as Constitution Week in Elmira.
