Richard Petty appears at Watkins Glen International for statue unveiling in his honor

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- Racing legend Richard Petty attended a Q&A panel and statue unveiling in his honor at Watkins Glen International on Sunday afternoon. This came just ahead of the long-awaited NASCAR Cup Series Race.

Richard Petty, also known as The King, is a NASCAR legend with an impressive and long-lasting career. Fans were spread across the track near the Pre-Race Stage just to catch a glimpse of the man himself and take a picture with the infamous hat.

"He's a staple," said Jerry Hart, an attendee and long-time fan of Petty's. "He's been around forever. I mean, I was a little kid when I saw him race."

Petty raced for 34 years before retiring in 1991. Now, he remains the most decorated NASCAR driver to date. Petty won 200 NASCAR Cup Series races throughout his career and seven Cup Series championships.

In a quick panel appearance beforehand, fans got to hear from The King about all aspects of his career, some of his favorite memories, and all things racing. Many fans on the track say it was exciting just to be near him and have the chance to hear from him.

"It was one of the big things of today is to be able to see him," said Michele Lohr, another attendee and fan of the racer.

As a way to honor Petty, a statue resembling his famous cowboy-style hat was unveiled on WGI's notable track. The installation remained there for a short while on Sunday afternoon before getting moved to another spot at the Glen.

Fans were able to take pictures with the hat, check out the writing on the back, and learn all about the Petty family's racing legacy.

"You know, just to see the guy is amazing," said Hart. "I mean, he's [almost] 90 years old, he looks great, he looks healthy, he dresses like a movie star and it's great to see him."

While this season's NASCAR Cup Series at WGI ended on Sunday, the King's Hat is there to stay. The statue will remain at WGI for many races to come and for all fans to see.
