Campers Gear Up for NASCAR Weekend at Watkins Glen International

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- Campers are officially settled in at Watkins Glen International (WGI) for a weekend full of racing, fun, friends, and unforgettable memories. The campgrounds opened to the public on Wednesday, and by the end of the day, the site was buzzing with fans eager to enjoy some good food, great company, and of course, the thrill of NASCAR.

"We've been coming for four or five years and it's a blast," says Susan Dellastua.

For many, WGI is more than just a track, it's a tradition. Randy Blenos, a veteran camper, has been coming to WGI for 17 years and loves the community aspect.

"I like all the NASCAR tracks but I especially like this one because of the road course and the camaraderie of my neighbors who have been here for the same amount of time as I have," says Blenos.

It's not just about the races, the weekend offers plenty of activities like shopping, bowling, and sightseeing. For fans David and Joseph, it's the blend of family time and NASCAR excitement that keeps them coming back year after year.

"you get to spend time with the family and you get to watch your driver win who's your top driver," says David.

Joseph added, "We go and have fires and stuff out here we usually play music and stuff, hang out, talk, and then during the afternoons and stuff right around 2 or so is when we're walking around checking out all the stands."

Strolling through the campgrounds, you'll find fans cheering for a wide variety of drivers, from Kyle Busch and Justin Allgaier to Chase Elliot. While everyone has their favorite, it's the electric atmosphere of Watkins Glen that unites them all.

For some campers, the track holds a special significance beyond the races. Tony Vickio, a retired sign maker who used to subcontract at WGI, shared his unique connection to the track.

"I've worked here for I don't know how long but I had a sign company, but I subcontracted out here and drove the pace cars for about 30 years, and I have a good connection here, I retired a couple years ago and I'm still back," says Vickio.

The weekend's excitement is only just beginning. Fans can look forward to the Xfinity Series race on Saturday, followed by Sunday's Cup Series race, which will mark the end of the 2024 season at Watkins Glen International.

Whether it's the roar of the engines, the camaraderie of fans, or the chance to relax with family and friends, this NASCAR weekend at WGI is hoping to deliver memories that'll last a lifetime.
