Biden approves Fed. Disaster Declaration for Tioga Co., Pa. and surrounding counties

TIOGA COUNTY, PA. (WENY) -- President Joe Biden Wednesday approved a disaster declaration to free up federal help to communities still cleaning up after remnants of Debby caused severe flooding in Tioga and Potter Counties over a month ago.

The move frees up federal money to supplement state and local recovery efforts. The help is available for those still recovering from the flood in Tioga, Potter, Lycoming and Union Counties.

“This aid is vital to families... and will provide necessary resources to homes, businesses and others who were devastated by Tropical Storm Debby,” said Congressman Glenn G.T. Thompson. “We must support our neighbors in need and rebuild our communities.”

The assistance could help cover the cost of temporary housing and home repairs. Some people might be able to apply for low-cost loans and other assistance programs.

“I directed the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency to lead a multi-agency response and state personnel have been on the ground since the day of the storms helping our local communities recover. This federal assistance will make a huge difference in helping Pennsylvanians recoup their losses for everything from medical expenses to home repairs," said Governor Josh Shapiro.

Meanwhile, The White House has yet to approve a disaster declaration submitted by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul for damage caused to the Southern Tier and Western New York by the same storm.
