WELLSBORO, PA. (WENY) -- The Pennsylvania Department of Education is distributing millions of dollars to schools in new environmental repair grants to over 100 schools in the Commonwealth, according to Gov. Josh Shapiro.

The Wellsboro Area School District has received $629,343 from the program. Statewide, 109 school districts are sharing $75 million in funding.

“Students can’t learn and educators can’t teach in unsafe, harmful environments, and the Shapiro Administration is committed to creating healthy learning spaces in schools across the Commonwealth,” said Khalid Mumin, Pennsylvania's Department of Education Secretary. “This funding will enable schools to repair buildings and provide students and school staff with safe air to breathe, water to drink, and classrooms to learn in.”

Schools can use the money to improve water infrastructure, reduce lead, eliminate mold or asbestos and other projects that would remove environmental hazards from schools.
