ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Ithaca Tompkins International Airport is getting over $2.5 million dollars for various improvements through the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program.

The airport is getting $2,090,070 to purchase a new aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle, $401,692 for taxiway rehabilitation and construction and $187,537 for new runway signage and lighting, according to New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.

"New York’s airports welcome millions of travelers each year, and it is vital that they have up-to-date infrastructure needed for passengers to travel safely," Gillibrand said.

The new money is part of a state-wide $59 million grant to 26 airports in New York.

"This $59+ million federal investment in new terminals, taxiways, safety, and other critical infrastructure upgrades will help airports soar. I fought hard to bolster the Airport Improvement Program in the FAA reauthorization this past year because I know this program is the main federal lifeline for these airports and today’s investment will help our local economies take off," said Schumer.

The Elmira Corning Regional Airport is also getting funding under the program. The facility is getting almost $950,000 for runway rehabilitation.
