UPDATE: WENY News spoke to David Irons, one of the people who called police after finding bones along the Chemung River.
Irons tells WENY News they called 911 after finding what he believes is a human skull. He says he and two others stumbled upon the remains after trying to reach a boat near the bike trail.
"The boat was just a product of what got our attention to get us down there," said Irons. "...I was looking for a path to get us out of there, so the way we decided to go is how we stumbled [upon] whoever's bones are down there."
"We were floating the boat, trying to get it across a couple of land spots when we stumbled across them."
New York State Police are still conducting their investigation; there is no official confirmation yet on whether or not the remains are in fact human.
