Schuyler County District Attorney announces retirement

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Schuyler County District Attorney announced on Monday he will retire from the role.
Joseph Fazzary was elected to the position in 1997. At the time, he was the youngest person ever in New York State to be elected District Attorney.
He started with the DA's office as an intern in 1992. Fazzary then became an Assistant District Attorney in 1993, before running for the District Attorney job, according to a press release sent to WENY News.
“It has truly been an honor and privilege for me to serve the residents of Schuyler and many of the surrounding counties, as well as the People of the State of New York for all these years," said Fazzary, the Schuyler County District Attorney. "I would also like to thank the multiple police agencies that I have worked with for so long. The Southern Tier is extremely fortunate to have the law enforcement professionals it has. They are all well trained and work hand in hand to make our region a safe place to live.”
In his 34 years serving in the District Attorney's Office, Fazzary has prosecuted several high profile murder cases including the murders of Amber Brockway, Daniel Bennett, and Theresa Ford. His office also successfully launched the Justice Center of the Southern Tier, a location designed to support and assist crime victims with resources and other help. So far, the program has assisted over 400 people.
Fazzary's last day in office will be Dec. 31, 2025. He says he plans to spend more time with his family in retirement.
