House Republicans Reveal New Plan to Fund the Government
WASHINGTON, D.C. - We are just hours away before the government shuts down. House Republican members said there is a plan to fund the government but this measure does not include President-Elect Donald Trump’s wish to address the debt ceiling.
Speaking with our local congressional members like Congressman Mike Kelly (R- PA), the plan is simple and there’s three components to this measure: one, fund the government. Two, provide disaster relief following those bad storms. Three, provide relief for farmers.
Members have been scrambling after a Trump-backed proposal, which included suspending the debt ceiling for two years, failed on the floor. That's something roughly 40 Republicans could not get on board with and voted down the measure alongside Democrats. Those Republicans broke away from the party after Trump took to social media saying he wanted that to be included in this stopgap measure.
We asked Rep. Kelly his thoughts on the last minute scramble and about the debt ceiling not being included in this current version:
“If we’re gonna truly go through what the nation asked for, the mandate was given by the American people, the voters came out and said what works for the president, what his plan was going forward and I think it’s very strong,” said Rep. Kelly. “And we can talk back and forth about a get together to be on board, I think we should all be on board but I've been here long enough there's nothing harder than to do the easy things while the result may be hard for some people. We come out with a clean CR [continuing resolution] and go forward.
We followed up with: WHAT ARE YOUR FEELINGS IT’S [the debt ceiling] IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RIGHT NOW?
“What I think we’re trying to do right now is get a clean CR, get through this, get to next year,” said Rep. Kelly. “That's the key.”
The clock strikes at midnight for a shutdown but now here’s the big test: will it pass? The measure requires two-thirds majority vote. With such small margins in the House, Speaker Johnson will need Democratic support on this.
