CORNING, NY (WENY) -- Tuesday, December 17th was the Corning City Republican's turn in the 16th Annual Bell Ringing Challenge against the City Democrats. This is a friendly competition between the two parties, to raise money for the Corning Salvation Army's Red Kettle Drive.

"We recognize that sometimes elections can be divisive but we came together to unite for a good cause to help a great organization. The Salvation Army does so much good work to support families right here in our community," said 132nd District Assemblyman Phil Palmesano.

On Monday, December 16th, members of the Corning City Democrats rang the bell in Centerway Square.

Assemblyman Palmesano said while it's a fun competition, at the end of the day, the real winner is the Salvation Army.

"[The] Salvation Army is going to win. The families they help support are the ones who are going to win and that's why we united for this. We know it's a good cause. [We] came together, put politics aside, and maybe that can send a message to others in politics that sometimes it's good to unite for a good cause. We can come together and agree, to help support local programs and organizations like the Salvation Army that does so much to help families in our community," said Assemblyman Palmesano.

The Corning City Republicans will match all of Tuesday's donations up to $250.
