NASCAR's Return to Watkins Glen: A Boost for Local Employment and Tourism
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY)-- In a short 20 days, NASCAR returns to Watkins Glen International for "Go Bowling at the Glen." The popular event attracts fans from all over, providing a significant boost to local tourism.
"It does extend our tourism season and we're hopeful that we have wonderful fall weather and great crowds and, yeah, I think it's going to be great," says Watkins Glen Mayor Laurie DeNardo. "The next couple of weekends are very busy up there and busy in the village for sure."
Efforts to position Watkins Glen as a year-round tourist destination continue to play a critical role in the future development of the village and surrounding areas.
"It's a great community and we love having the tourism here. It really boosts the economy, it helps with sales tax and it's really kind of fun to have the different events and we've had added events in the community, in the county, so it all kind of ties together," says Mayor DeNardo.
Ahead of NASCAR, the Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce and Express Employment Professionals in Corning will be hosting a hiring event to fill positions for race week.
"We anticipate there are being more added as time gets closer to the event," says Amber Akers, Senior Employment Specialist with Express Employment Professionals in Corning. "Right now we're looking for gate attendants, where they'll be scanning tickets, potentially some security, some general labor, some cleaning. There's some apparel. It just really depends on exactly which vendor and which parts they're going to be looking for. But there's going to be a lot, for there's something for everyone."
Tomorrow (Thursday, August 22nd) over 100-plus jobs available to anyone 18 and older interested in working during the high-energy, week-long event.
"Go Bowling at the Glen" is running from Septmeber 11th - 15th. Details about the festivities can be found here, and on WENY.com for coverage throughout the event.
