Update: Man dies after fire in Southport auto repair business
UPDATE: 5/24/23 3:30 p.m. -- According to the Chemung County Sheriff's Office, a 55-year-old man died after being airlifted from a Southport fire on Tuesday, May 23rd. Thomas Brynes ran TJ's Ultimate Auto Repair business in a garage on the same property that Southern Tier Logistics leases buildings on.
Police say Brynes had suffered burns to the majority of his body and was located in the parking lot of Southern Tier Logistics. Despite being conscious and alert when medical personnel arrived on the scene, police say he passed away after being transported to Upstate Medical burn unit in Syracuse.
SOUTHPORT, NY (WENY) -- Fire crews responded to the scene of a fire at storage building on South Main Street in Southport Tuesday afternoon.
A plume of black smoke could be seen for miles, as far away as Interstate-86 in Horseheads, just after 4 P.M.
WENY's reporter on scene could see a garage structure on the far east side of the property, completely melted from the heat. The building was located on the same property as Southern Tier Logistics.
A medical helicopter was also called in to airlift a victim to the hospital; their condition is unknown. Fire investigators and utility workers arrived on scene around 5:00PM.
