UPDATE (6:50 p.m. Saturday) Elmira Police have released the name of the person involved in the deadly crash.

Police say the crash involved 24-year-old Matthew Leonard.

Police are still investigating the incident.

UPDATE (6:50 p.m.) Police say the driver involved in this incident has died. 

According to EPD, the investigation revealed two Elmira Fire Department personnel had come upon the 2004 BMW stopped in traffic on Railroad Avenue and noticed the driver appeared to be passed out at the wheel. 

Those two personnel approached to make contact with the driver because they were concerned they were having a medical emergency. As they approached, the driver reportedly appeared to suddenly wake up and pressed the gas, causing the car to go south at a high rate of speed. 

The vehicle then crossed East Church Street and continues on Railroad Avenue, across West Gray Street, entering the Centertown Garage where it hit the wall. 

The driver was immediately sent to a local hospital but was pronounced dead after arrival. 

The identity of the victim will not be released until the family is notified.

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- One person was injured after crashing into the Centertown Parking Garage in Downtown Elmira. 

The incident happened shortly after 2:00 p.m. Friday afternoon. The garage is located off of West Gray Street.
