VAN ETTEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- Backyard flooding issues have been a continuous occurrence for Van Etten residents on Hixson Street. Now, one resident is speaking out as the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said they will not help solve the problem.

When resident LaVerne Daniels inherited his property in the early 1990s, it was reportedly not a flood prone area nor was it referred to as a flood zone. There is an exceptionally small stream that runs along the railroad tracks behind Hixon street, but it is barely even visible when looking at it from a satellite image.

With the recent heavy rain, many areas saw at least some flooding, but this spot in Van Etten does make for a curious case in terms of how the land has likely reshaped over time. Daniels told me, "Everytime it rains the water is naturally going to come up on our properties, and it just gets to be a problem. It has been that way for the past 10-20 years. They (NYDEC) just refuse to help clean it out."

Going forward, Daniels plans to seek help from the Town of Van Etten once the Village dissolution has been finalized.
