ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) – The Elmira Police Department has released more details regarding the Perine Street home invasion that occurred Sunday morning.

According to police, around 6:12 in the morning, officers responded to the 500 block of Perine Street for a report of a home invasion in progress. Officers had learned the intruder had made entry into the residence and was shot by the resident.

Today, officers have identified the suspect as Jason Lopez, 33, of Elmira.

Lopez remains hospitalized as he receives treatment for a single gunshot wound.

According to police, the homeowner and Lopez are not acquainted in anyway and the motive is still under investigation.

The weapon used by the homeowner was reportedly a 12 gauge shotgun; police say the firearm is legally owned by the homeowner.

According to police, there was also a female resident and four young children home at the time of the incident. Lopez was the only person injured.

The investigation into the incident continues. Charges against Lopez are possibly pending. There will be no charges filed against the homeowner.
