First of four "History and Science of Craft Beverages" held in Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The first of four history and science of craft beverages in the finger lakes series kicked off tonight for a sold out crowd at the Museum of Earth. The series is a collaboration between the Museum of the Earth, the History Center in Tompkins County, the Sciencenter, and Experience The Finger Lakes. Tonight's session featured wine and geology. People could first grab something to eat and sample some Finger Lakes wines. Followed by a presentation from Sheldrake Point Winery and a tasting of their various wines.
"It's really interesting," said Sciencenter Senior Director of External Relations, Monika Collins. "So the Finger Lakes has so much history, culture and science to it that's relatively unknown."
The presentation talked about all things involved in the wine making process, like how soil can affect vines and wine textures. With each of the sessions tailor-made to explore our area's history and method of producing alcohol.
"I, myself, am learning quite a lot about the variances between climate, geology and time that have impacted the various wines in the region," said Collins. "Why they have a certain acidity, why they have a certain fruit balance and why they are one of our best resources."
If you missed out on Wednesday night's event, don't worry. Organizers say there's a handful of tickets left for their next session.
