ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Several cows could be seen roaming around the scene of a multi-car accident on I-86 eastbound near the Elmira exit (56).
The crash happened around 12:30 a.m. Friday. According to initial scanner reports, two tractor trailers and a sedan were involved.
Police said the cattle truck had roughly 35 cows on-board at the time of the crash. At least three cows were killed. The driver of the cattle truck was uninjured. There's no official cause of the crash, but snow was falling and covering the road around the time of the crash.
One tractor trailer could be seen laying on its side. Several hundred feet of guard-rail was destroyed.
First responders spent hours trying to round up the cows, and clean up the debris. A short time after the crash, Elmira Animal Control Officers were dispatched to the scene.
During recovery efforts, traffic was backed up on both lanes heading eastbound. As of 2:30 a.m. Friday morning, traffic was reopened back to one lane. But a short time later, both lanes were shut down again.
Travelers should avoid the area if possible.
