ELMIRA -- The Arctic League fell short of its goal at Sunday’s telethon, but organizers aren't worried just yet. The people of Chemung County pledged just under $29,000 at the telethon -- that's $10,000 less than last year. But Arctic League treasurer Mike Wayne is still optimistic donors will come through. He says even though pledges were down at the telethon, cash received so far is about even from this time last year -- about $84,000. That's nearly three-quarters of the Arctic League's $115,000 total goal. Wayne says the league has had to spend a lot more money on gifts this year. “It’s a combination of rising prices and a greater need. We expected the number of children benefiting from the Arctic League will be much greater than last year than it was last year. But that's important that we fill that need, because the most important thing is that all children in Chemung County wake up and find some presents from family and friends on Christmas morning,” said Wayne. If you'd still like to donate, call the Arctic League at (607) 733-4576, or stop by one of its 12 auxiliary book locations:
