ELMIRA -- Elmira city leaders have put the sale of the Mark Twain Golf Course on hold because of the economy. Last summer, the State Senate approved legislation allowing the city to sell the course. But Mayor John Tonello says the city wants to maximize potential revenue from the sale, so he's waiting until the economy starts to turn around. In the meantime, golfers are paying more per round. An added fee helped raise $25,000 to help maintain the grounds. “Our intent is to use that money and put it right back into the golf course and make the improvements necessary for maintenance, and not put the burden on the city's taxpayers,” said Tonello. Mark Twain season passes go on sale November 15.
