State police want to warn you about scammers pretending to be cops - asking for donations. Someone is calling asking for a donation to the state police DWI campaign, but police say they don't solicit funds over the phone. They say if you're interested in donating to any cause over the phone - ask the caller to send you something in the mail so you can read more about it; but, even then, you have to be careful. "Even if they send you stuff you still can't be sure it's legit or not. I mean, anyone can make up stuff and and have it look legit, and it would really be a scam," said Jason Fifield, a Horseheads State Police Trooper. If you donate to a bogus organization- you could not only lose money, but also have your identity stolen.
