New open burning regulations in New York went into effect last week and now open burning across the state, even in small rural communities, is banned.
Burning trash and leaves, even in a barrel, is illegal in all areas of New York.
Farmers cannot burn agricultural plastics, but are required to bring it to a landfill.
Campfires and cooking fires are exempt from the regulations.
After some complaints about people being forced to rent wood chippers or pay to have their brush hauled away, the state revised to proposal to allow burning of small brush between May 15th and the following March 15th.
